Earthquake Survival Kit Items

An earthquake survival kit should be included in your survival gear investment.

To beat the odds during a disaster, you need multiple plans and strategies.

Like the 2011 5.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked Virginia and was felt all the way in Indiana, the threat of an earthquake is a very real possibility no matter where you live.

While the destructive nature of earthquakes occurring in North America in the last decade have been minimal, the 1994 Northridge earthquake killed 57 people and injured over 8,000. Buildings collapsed, roads were impassible, and thousands went without power or water for over a week.

Imagine how many of those people affected were completely unprepared, and weren't equipped with an earthquake survival kit.

Countries like Turkey, Iran, China, and Haiti have all experienced deadly earthquakes in the last few years, resulting in days of lost power and poor living conditions. Don't be a statistic – start your preparations now.

Some disasters are somewhat predictable, like a hurricane or wildfire – you know they're coming and you know the path they'll most likely take.

The harsh truth about earthquakes is that there is no warning. The aftershocks can be just as unpredictable and devastating as the main shock.

To prevent being left helpless and without the necessities of life, now is the time to begin building your survival kit.

Can Animals Predict Earthquakes?

Although humans still haven't figured out a way to accurately predict when an earthquake will occur, some animals seem to have a naturally ability to sense an impending quake.

Greek historians noted the panicked frenzy of animals that fled from a city days before a devastating earthquake, while in 2009, a colony of frogs left their pond before a 6.2 magnitude earthquake rocked L'Aquila, Italy.

Many pet owners report that animals begin acting strangely before an earthquake occurs – hiding, howling, and acting nervous. Perhaps it's time to get that puppy you've been promising the kids!

Preparing an Earthquake Survival Kit

If you want to start gathering supplies for your own earthquake kit, then you'll need to stock up on the basic essentials – food, water, shelter, tools, and other accessories.

Because of the delay in receiving relief efforts, and the time it takes stable living conditions to be restored, most survivalists recommend being prepared to live “on your own” for at least three to five days.

Here's a list to get your earthquake kit started:

  • Water - one gallon of water per person, per day, and a survival water purifier to create more
  • Non-perishable food - canned meats, high calorie meal bars, freeze-dried foods
  • Battery powered or hand crank radio
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Multi-tool
  • Crescent wrench to turn off gas and water lines
  • Survival knife
  • Cell phone with charger or extra batteries
  • Prescription medications
  • Infant formula and diapers
  • Pet food
  • Cash
  • Copies of important family documents
  • Sleeping bag / bivy bag
  • Complete change of clothing
  • Waterproof matches or lighter
  • Feminine supplies
  • Extra glasses

Storing Your Earthquake Survival Kit

With earthquakes being so unpredictable, you never know where you'll be when disaster strikes.

Many people like to believe they'll be at home during an emergency, but in reality, there's just as much of a chance that you'll be at work or on the road, so keeping multiple survival kits handy is the best plan.

An important rule to remember is to store your earthquake survival kit in an easily accessible area that's low to the ground – you don't want it falling down on you from a high shelf.

For home storage, prepare one kit per every two people in your family and store in a location that is easy to get to. If possible, store all of your earthquake survival supplies in one easily portable container or bag.

Because of the strong possibility of an earthquake occurring while you're at work, ensure you store a 1 – 2 day earthquake survival kit there as well.

Finally, in case you get stranded while traveling, you should keep an earthquake kit in your car. In addition to the normal items (food, water, shelter, blankets), your vehicle kit should include jumper cables.
